Som Energia is a pioneering renewable energy cooperative in Spain, founded in 2010 in Girona. It provides 100% renewable electricity to its members while developing sustainable energy projects, including solar, wind, hydro, and biogas. The cooperative follows a democratic, community-driven model where members contribute a €100 deposit to join and participate in decision-making. Som Energia actively collaborates with municipalities and local groups to promote energy sustainability. One of its major innovations is "Generation kWh," a collectively owned solar field, supplying clean energy to households. By 2019, the cooperative had over 54,300 members, had invested over €13 million in renewable energy projects, and supplied electricity to numerous homes and businesses. Som Energia is also part of REScoop, a European network of renewable energy cooperatives. It stands as a model for citizen-driven energy transformation, promoting a sustainable, decentralized, and fair energy system.
