Northvolt, a Swedish battery company founded in 2016, aimed to produce the world’s most sustainable batteries with clean energy. It secured over $10 billion in funding from investors like Volkswagen and Goldman Sachs, with its flagship factory, Northvolt Ett, positioned as a European alternative to Asian battery dominance. However, Northvolt struggled with scaling, safety issues, reliance on Chinese machinery, and operational inefficiencies. These challenges led to production delays, loss of key contracts—such as a $2.1 billion order from BMW—and ultimately, severe financial distress. In November 2024, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, reporting $5.8 billion in debt and minimal cash reserves. Despite securing emergency funding, Northvolt’s future remains uncertain. Its downfall highlights the struggles European battery manufacturers face against established Asian competitors, emphasizing the need for strategic alliances and policy support to sustain the industry.
