Jaljeevika Centre for Aquatic Livelihood aims to improve livelihoods, food security, and resilience in rural India by promoting sustainable aquaculture, fisheries, and water-based livelihoods. Operating since 2013, they have empowered over 20,000 small-scale fish farmers across Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, and Maharashtra. Their work focuses on marginalized groups, using an integrated livelihood approach that includes resource management, enterprise development, access to markets and credit, research, and policy advocacy. The AQUA+ model, central to their strategy, utilizes local extension agents, self-governed producer organizations, and existing water resources to support farmers. The model places special emphasis on women fish farmers and self-help groups. Additionally, Jaljeevika has established AquaFund to foster the development of aquaculture and inland fisheries. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, including civil society, NGOs, and government, they address sector challenges and implement coordinated solutions to improve rural livelihoods.
